Earthquake Preparedness for Point Roberts
Point Roberts is uniquely isolated during a major earthquake. Surrounded by water on three sides and Canada to the north, it’s critical to prepare for limited access to external resources in an emergency.
Before an Earthquake
- Secure furniture and heavy objects to prevent injury.
- Prepare a go-bag with water, food, medication, and important documents for at least 7 days.
- Make a plan that includes communication methods and meeting points with your family.
- Remember that leaving the Point might be impossible for several days; plan to shelter locally.
During an Earthquake
- Drop, Cover, and Hold On. Stay indoors until the shaking stops.
- If outside, move away from buildings, trees, and power lines.
- Do not rush to the border or attempt to drive unless instructed it’s safe to do so.
After an Earthquake
- Check yourself and others for injuries and provide first aid as needed.
- Inspect your home for structural damage and gas leaks.
- Stay informed using a battery-powered or hand-crank radio.
- Be prepared for potential aftershocks.
Special Considerations for Point Roberts
- Border crossings may be closed or delayed for an extended time.
- Keep your passport and documents in an accessible location.
- Coordinate with neighbors for community support and check on those who live alone.
- Know that Benson Road’s Firehall is considered high ground and a local gathering point.
